Random Thoughts #2: Triangles

This is a trend I don't get. It's like triangles have taken over visual art for two years now. Flickr-based photography/collage/drawing? Triangles everywhere. Any art blog? It has triangles in the title or somewhere in the layout. Even music (usually drone/ambient/space/lo-fi stuff) has started jumping on this bandwagon, with triangles either in titles or on the cover art (or any other general presentation items). Of course, I'm not dissing triangles by default. The sheer amount of work being done right now gives me the ability to discern between the triangle-based art I like and the triangle-based art I dislike, by still approaching every work singularly. Even so, what I want to understand, first and foremost, is - how did this happen? How/why did triangles become hip? (I might add pictures later).

I feel we need pictures to fully understand the extent of this.

I suppose triangle became prominent in design because they're both a departure from the retro feeling of the square and a step further towards absolute abstraction. Note they came together with adding a lot of layers, sparkles and texture to images, which balanced the "less is more" feeling.

I never really thought about why though. That's interesting.

Also, props for that new blog. It's awesome.

I'm not complaining about this, obliques and angularity are some of the things I adored about Cubism.

Rudy, by the way, why weren't we already friends on RYM? Haha, I know we've had contact before.
